Yes, if they are real reps and not rehearsal. The number that matters is not how many mock interviews you sit. It is how many times you field a follow-up you did not see coming and get scored by someone other than yourself. Do enough of those that the second question stops rattling you and your answer still holds, spread over a few short sessions instead of one cram the night before. For most people that is a small handful of genuine reps, which is why the three to five most guides quote misleads more than it helps: most of what it counts is solo script rehearsal, and a rehearsed script wins the first question and dies on the second.

Why "three to five" measures the wrong thing
The standard advice across career sites lands in the same place: do three to five mocks, and remember that feedback matters more than the count (Code Grey on Medium, and Carrus.io). The second half is right. The number is close to meaningless, because it counts the wrong unit.
A mock interview is not a thing you attend. It is a rep on one skill: fielding a question you cannot fully predict and defending your answer out loud, in real time, while someone judges it. Sit through five sessions where you recite prepared stories and nobody pushes back, and you have done five rehearsals and zero reps. Do one where a sharp friend keeps asking "why did you do it that way" until you are off your script, and that single rep is worth more than the five.
So stop counting sessions. Count how many unscripted follow-ups you have actually fielded, and how many times you got scored on something you did not write yourself.
What a real rep tests that solo rehearsal can't
The interview is not checking whether you can recite. It is checking whether you can do the work and explain it live, under mild pressure, to a person deciding whether to bet on you. Those are different muscles.
Rehearsing alone trains recall. You learn your stories cold, and that carries you through the opening question, the one you saw coming. Then the interviewer asks the thing you did not prepare for, the "what would you have done differently," and recall has nothing to hand you. This is the exact seam where prepared candidates come apart, and it is invisible when you practice by yourself, because you never ask yourself the question you did not think of.
A real rep puts a second mind in the loop who can. That is the whole point. Not reps for their own sake, reps that surface the follow-up and the tells you cannot see from inside your own head.
So how many do you actually need?
Enough that the follow-up stops surprising you. That is a stopping rule, not a number, and it is the honest answer nobody wants to print because it will not fit in a headline.
Here is why the fixed number exists at all. "Three to five" is a fossil from when a mock meant booking a human coach or cashing a favor with a friend, at maybe an hour each. Reps were scarce and expensive, so the advice rationed them and told you to wring every drop from the few you could get. That was sound budgeting for a real constraint.
The constraint moved. When an unscripted, scored rep costs you minutes instead of a booking, "how many" stops being a budget question. It becomes a readiness question, and readiness has a clear finish line: you field the second question, then the third, and your answer holds instead of unraveling. Some people hit that in three sittings. Some need eight. Cost is no longer what caps you. Feedback quality is, whether the reps are actually unscripted and actually scored on the substance, not just your speaking pace.
Should you cram them or space them?
Space them. Distributed practice beating a single cram is one of the most reliably replicated findings in learning research. Cepeda and colleagues gathered decades of studies in a 2006 review in Psychological Bulletin and found it held across the board: the same reps spread over several days stick better than the same reps stacked in one sitting (Cepeda et al., 2006).
For interview prep that means a short rep every couple of days beats a two-hour marathon the night before. The marathon feels productive and teaches you almost nothing you will still have on interview morning. Short, spaced, and slightly uncomfortable is the pattern that lasts.
How to run a real rep tonight, for free
You can build most of this by hand, and you should at least once.
Open your laptop camera and record. Answer a real question out loud from memory, no notes, something like "tell me about a decision you made that turned out wrong, and what you did next." Then recruit one person who will not go easy on you and hand them a single job: after every answer, ask "why did you do it that way" or "what would you change now," and keep pushing until you are off script. That off-script moment is the rep. Watch the recording back and mark the three tells that travel into any interview: where you reached for filler, where your pace ran away, and the moment your eyes left the lens.

Keep a one-line note after each: the single thing you will change next time. Without that note you are drilling habits instead of fixing them.
