HireVue interview questions: 14 real ones to practice

HireVue asks the questions you'd expect, like "tell me about a time you worked on a team" and "why do you want to work here." Each one pops up on screen, a short countdown gives you time to think, and then you record your answer. HireVue's own candidate FAQ says most video assessments have five to eight questions and take under 20 to 30 minutes.
Once you submit an answer, you can't go back to it, and HireVue can't give you a do-over either. Its candidate support page (updated April 2025) says only the hiring company can approve a retake. So your first take is usually the one they see.
The questions are easy to guess. The hard part is when the camera light comes on and nobody nods back.
For how HireVue scores you, read how to pass a HireVue interview. This page is the questions and how to practice them.
How does a HireVue interview work?
It's one-way and you do it on your own time. You open the employer's link, test your camera and mic, and each question shows up as text or a short video. A countdown gives you time to think. When it hits zero, recording starts by itself.
The employer picks the questions, the thinking time, the answer limit, the deadline and whether you can re-record. HireVue's FAQ only promises "several minutes" per answer.
Duke's economics department draws on students in bank recruiting. It notes that "some banks give you the chance to re-record your answer." Use every attempt to cut the "umm" and long pauses. Other employers give one take, and the instruction screen tells you which.
What questions does HireVue ask?
The employer writes them, so nobody can hand you your exact set. But the same few keep coming back. Duke's students found "by far the majority of questions were behavioral." Eight below come from HireVue's own candidate blog (May 2025), six from Duke's list.
| Type | Question |
|---|---|
| Intro | Tell me a little about yourself. |
| Motivation | Why do you want to work here? |
| Motivation | What are your long-term goals? |
| Motivation | Why did you leave your previous employer? |
| Self-assessment | What are your strengths and weaknesses? |
| Teamwork | Tell me about a time you worked on a team. |
| Teamwork | What would you do if a teammate wasn't pulling their weight? |
| Teamwork | Describe a time your team disagreed on the direction of a project. What did you do? |
| Adversity | Tell me about a time you failed and the lesson you learned from it. |
| Adversity | Tell us about a time you had to adapt quickly to change. |
| Decisions | Tell me about a time you had to make a quick decision without full information. |
| Problem solving | Describe a time you solved a problem independently. |
| Integrity | Tell me about a time you acted with integrity. |
| Work style | How do you stay organized when managing multiple projects? |
Banks like a curveball too. Duke's list includes "what is a recent headline that you read in the news?" Have one ready.
Seven of the 14 start with "tell me about a time" or "describe a time." So prepare real stories from your own life.
Pick your "tell me about a time you failed" story and two teamwork questions from the table, and answer them out loud before your deadline. How should you structure a 1 to 2 minute answer?
Use STAR (situation, task, action, result). HireVue itself recommends it to candidates. Spend most of your time on the action.
- Situation, about 15 seconds. One or two sentences on where you were and what was at stake.
- Task, about 10 seconds. The part that was yours to get done.
- Action, about 60 seconds. What you did, step by step, with "I" doing the verbs. This is the part they're listening for.
- Result, about 20 seconds. A number or a concrete outcome, then one line tying it to the job you want.
The most common slip is a 50-second setup. The timer cuts you off right as you reach what you did, and nobody's there to steer you back.
For "why do you want to work here," say your answer first, then give two specific reasons. Duke's advice works anywhere. Skip "culture" and anything a quick Google search turns up, and use something you heard from a person who works there.
How do you practice for a HireVue interview?
Record yourself under the real time limits, in one take, and watch it back. Do this 20-minute drill daily until your deadline.
- Pick three questions from the table, from the types you feel least ready for.
- Open your camera. Give yourself 30 seconds to think and 2 minutes to answer, on a visible timer (or your employer's limits, if you know them).
- One take. No restarts, because the real one may not allow them.
- Watch it back. Note when you got to the action, how many "umms" slipped in, and whether you finished in time.
- Record the weakest answer again and fix just the first problem you spotted.
HireVue's interview tips cover the setup. Find a quiet spot, put the light in front of you and get the strongest wifi you can. Duke's students add one trick. Hide your own preview if you can, and looking at the lens gets easier. The longer routine is in how to practice for an AI video interview.
Does HireVue have a free practice tool?
Yes, two, and both are free. Inside your real invitation, after the camera and mic check, there's a "Try a practice question" button. HireVue's support center says it rotates through three general questions that aren't about your role. You can replay your answer to check sound and lighting, and clicking it doesn't start your interview.
HireVue also runs a standalone practice interview at practice.hirevue.com, with a made-up employer it calls TotallyFakeCompany. No employer sees your answers, and HireVue deletes them after 30 days.
Use both, but know they teach the buttons, not the answers. The timed drill tests your stories.
FAQ
How many questions are in a HireVue interview?
Usually five to eight, per HireVue's candidate FAQ. The employer sets the number, and your invitation's intro screen shows it before you start.
Can you retake a HireVue interview?
Not on your own. Once you submit an answer it's final, and only the hiring company can approve a new attempt.
Is a HireVue interview hard?
The questions are standard, but the countdown, the blank screen and the single take make it feel hard. A few days of practicing out loud on camera takes most of the sting out.
Can HireVue detect cheating?
Don't test it. Reading off your screen shows in your eyes and pacing. Passing usually just gets you to a live round with follow-ups (where the line sits on AI in interviews).
Tonight, before you open your invitation link, set a 2-minute timer and record one answer to "tell me about a time you failed." Then watch it back once.
